Wintergreen Ski Resort
If ever you are in Virginia during winter and you plan to head on to
some other state to do some skiing, you really don't have to do that
because the state houses the best kept secret when it comes to skiing.
This is the Wintergreen Ski Resort. If you just flew in the
Charlottesville-Albermarle Airport to uncover the hidden skiing gem in
Wintergreen, then you would have to take a 40-mile drive from the
airport to get to the resort.
Aptly located in a town of the same name and set right on the Blue
Ridge Mountains just off the Blue Ridgeway Park, the Wintergreen Ski
Resort has 24 ski trails. These caters to skiers who are just beginning
to learn the sport up to those who are more advanced. Fourteen of the
trails are lighted at night for those who would like to indulge in some
night skiing. The ski resort is serviced by 8 lifts that include two of
high speed. Being a four-season resort, there are times in the year
that you can ski here right after you wake up in the morning as well as
spend the afternoon golfing.
Set on an area of 11,000 acres, the Wintergreen Ski Resort has a summit elevation of 3,515 feet and a vertical drop of 1,003 feet. The average annual snow fall reaches up to 34 inches. With a hundred percent ability to make snow, the resort is ideal for amily vacations and even for those group of friends out to have some fun. The ski resort also has a terrain park that is perfect for family outings with jibs and rails and snow features. The park is considered as the largest tubing park of the state as it has a 900 foot and 10 lane tubing hill for thrill-seekers who are not into skiing. A smaller snow tubing is also provided for the use of younger children.
Although the Wintergreen Ski Resort does not have a flagship hotel, there are privately-owned homes and condominiums that can provide accommodations for you and your family or your group of friends. These units hae full-equipped liing areas and kitchens for your convenience. Aside from offering skiing programs for beginners, the resort also provides other programs for the enjoyment of families, especially those with children. One of these is The Treehouse, which is a camp-like program for childrens aged 2 1/2 to 14 years old, where they spend some time indoors for crafts and games. The Wintergreen Ski Resort also provides othe fun activities like a game of tennis, horseback riding, hiking and snowmobiling.
